Process: Design

The design deliverables finalize the interactions and features described during the concept phase. All common user tasks are documented in detail, including error states. Designs include all final bitmap graphics and menu, dialog, and help text.

When I joined Palm in 1999 I introduced a printed flowchart format to document final designs. I’ve used flowcharts at every company I’ve worked at since Palm. Printed flowcharts are especially useful in design review meetings as they allow HI designers, product marketing and engineering to unambiguously see how the product will work and debate any changes to product features. Once the design has been approved, simple interactive prototypes test the design to make sure there’s a continuity of context when clicking from screen to screen.

Once approved, design specifications can be used as the basis for localization and QA test cases.

Design UI flowchart

A page from the Zire 71 camera HI flowchart is shown at top, and in detail below. Illustrations of application screens show all text, buttons, menus, and graphics. Arrows indicate next steps or results of user actions.

Flowcharts for most applications are usually 10 to 15 pages in length, though more complicated applications can require flowcharts over 30 pages in length.
